Freebooter's Fate

It should be noted that I have loved the miniatures on offer from Freebooter for a long time, they’re pretty expensive and not always that easy to get hold of in the UK (Though that has been changing of late) but the sculpts are beautiful.

I was excited when their miniatures began to curve into this amazing pirate skirmish game but have only recently taken the leap and purchased a starter set, some extras and enough to field a rival crew so I can run demo games and entice friends into fielding their own crews and perhaps forge a little campaign.

My choice of crew is the enigmatic masked, cloaked and fully armed Brotherhood…

To this mix I’ve added an alternate leader choice in The Queen of Shadows, a specialist in Apagado, with two mercenaries in the wings: Buscar and Gipsy.

Now until I get my hands on the rulebook and the cards in the starter set I can’t really gibber too much about crew selections or the like, though I think Gipsy will be off the cards because her advantages are proximity based and she’ll slow down the rest… With speed being one of the Brotherhood cornerstones.

Amusingly while I struggled to get a post or two ready they’ve all turned up, Brotherhood crews are limited to a maximum of one mercenary which considering their background makes a lot of sense… Buscar is a good choice because he fits the assassin profile and bolsters up the ranged side of things. The way the crews are structured is interesting, the imperials need a larger deckhand base to support specialists (1:1), where the Brotherhood can support two specialists to each deckhand and again this makes a lot of sense because the armada is drawn from a more organised military force and the Brotherhood are by their very nature specialist. I’ve not really looked too deeply into the other crews as yet but I’m wondering if the pirates have higher mercenary allowances.

My Crew (with either the Master Assassin or the Queen of Shadows)

I’ve assembled the starter set tonight and undercoated most of them ready to paint tomorrow. I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to get them painted up but I’ll try and show them off as soon as I can. I’ve also started to give thought to scenery and stockpiled foam board in readiness.

The quality of the cards, the rulebook and the miniatures is extremely high and they included card protectors in with my order which was an unexpected extra. I’m excited by some of the art for the Deep Jungle expansion which seemed to show a more jungled orientated Brotherhood specialist… Or possibly an entirely new faction or mercenary with ties or similarities to them.
